DHS implements new ID requirements

The Department of Homeland Security announced that as of Oct. 10, visitors seeking to enter military bases and most federal facilities will need to present state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards issued by states that are compliant with REAL ID Act standards.

The act, passed by Congress in 2005 on the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, establishes minimum security standards for the issuance and production of official identification such as driver’s licenses.

Bases and federal facilities also will accept IDs issued by states that have received extensions to become compliant, and will continue to accept them during a three-month grace period before the expiration of current extensions goes into effect.
