Critical Technologies are those technologies which are viewed as being essential to giving the warfighter the edge in battle. These technologies do not currently exist. DoD is looking to the DIB for companies that are conducting research and development to assist with creating both the technology and products – weapons. The speakers explained the six focus areas, including artificial intelligence, biomanufacturing, contested logistics, quantum technologies, hypersonics, and directed energy. Also highlighted were supporting capabilities such as software engineering, data engineering, modeling and simulation, digital twins, advanced manufacturing, and energy management. It was underscored that small businesses can contribute to these needs and efforts in many ways. It was also noted that WPI can help companies navigate federal contracting requirements and identify paths into these emerging markets.
